I am totally shocked and completely disheartened by the results of Haddie's appointment today. Our girl weighed in at 11#, 5 oz (and 24" long) which dropped her from the 90th percentile to the 50th. When the doctor came in, Haddie was crying and was overall very fussy for the entire appointment. She acknowledged her fussing and stated "I know why she's crabby. It's because she's hungry." And then she unloaded all of the information above indicating poor weight gain. I made her re-check her weight, because I just could not believe what I was hearing. Alas, the numbers still came out the same. She started asking me a series of questions to determine the cause and I had to simply say "Her fussing today is not characteristic of her. She has been so much more content, basically since Labor Day. She rarely fusses or acts uncomfortable when she's nursing, she's not refluxing, she's eating on both sides, she's eating every 2.5-3 hours and longer throughout the night. All of my concerns for acid reflux had completely gone away. She is content. She will sit in her swing calmly, even if it's not swinging. She will lay on her stomach and do tummy time really well for longer periods. She's awake more throughout the day......"
So my doctor is hypothesizing that my volume has decreased or that I am producing "skim milk". I have to start nursing her every 2 hours and continue to offer both boobs. I can no longer pump, which I was doing once a day to build a supply for my return to work. Every drop of breastmilk has to go to Haddie.
We have to go back in two weeks to check her weight, and if she continues to gain poorly, I will have to see a lactation consultant.
So keep your fingers crossed and bring on the lactation cookies!
I just hate that the doctor's concerns are so different than your instinct about how haddie has been doing. So at least she has been happy even if she has been hungry. I hope she gets back on track asap so you don't have to worry!
ReplyDeleteI hate that I don't have a digital scale to keep track, but she has been popping more.
