22 months

Avett is 22 months old today, and he actually gets to celebrate it thanks to this year being a leap year! He did nothing out of the ordinary for his big day. Just the regular old wake up crabby and go to bed crabby routine.

The crabbiness is one very definite and noticeable change. Avett is happy as a clam sitting and playing in his crib in the morning. He would sit and talk for hours if I let him. But I don't because I need to go to work and he needs to eat. So as soon as I pull him out of the crib and lay him on his changing table, the kid is a crying maniac. At first I thought maybe it's the changing table and he's too big for it, so I tried changing him on the ground. He still cried and squirmed around 100 times worse than he did before. I try distractors and toys and books. I try to choose outfits that he'll get excited about: cars, trucks, or monsters. I tried leaving him in his crib until he started crying. One time I even thought, maybe if I feed him first, he'll be happy after. So I fed him oatmeal in his bed. He did enjoy that but it didn't change the outcome. So instead in the morning, I get dressed in my armor of defense and try to drown out his wailing cries by ignoring him. His mood does improve once he's eating, but he hates waiting for his food to be prepared. (Maybe if you'd eat better at dinner you wouldn't be so hungry in the morning... Just a thought).

The same goes for at night. As soon as he sees me grab his blanket, Avett books it into Ahbtie Mooey's room and tries to hide and buy time from going to bed. I'm still working on sticking to his bed time routine, but it is darn tough to brush teeth with a head rolling all around. Once his PJs are on, he settles in nicely on my lap for story time. We read usually 3-5 books (sometimes the same ones over and over) and then I lay him down for bed. He screams as soon as I walk away but once I shut the door he usually quiets down.
As of his last two baths, he has started crying as soon as his feet hit the water. It's sad because he gets very excited for bath time but for some reason doesn't like it once he's in. Our bath time routine is for me to (clean the tub first, of course), fill the tub with water, hand Avett his toys so he can throw them in one by one, get his rag and towel ready and then Avett goes and lays in the hallway waiting to be changed. It's the only time he willingly accepts a diaper change from me (Aaron says he has no troubles). I bought him some new bath toys in hopes that will pique his interest again. We'll have to wait and see as they were intended to be Easter presents.
Avetts never been that great of an eater and that hasn't changed. He does eat a huge breakfast and likes anything from oatmeal to cereal to bagels to pancakes (not a big egg guy yet). He does very well with feeding himself, even with cereal! He does not like making a mess or getting his fingers dirty.
We are working on learning vehicle names and sounds, animals, animal sounds, colors and numbers/counting. He's fairly inconsistent; however, pretty darn good at saying two when we're counting. But that's the only number he says.
He is figuring out how to go down the stairs without holding onto Momma.
He is starting to understand that there's a baby on the way. When I ask him where the baby is, he comes over and pulls my shirt up to look at or kiss my belly... But recently he's been pulling up his own shirt instead.
He is much more into stuffed animals/beanie babies. He likes to give them kisses and feed them his water.
He is still very into playing with his fire truck, garbage truck, tractor and bus. Per Aaron, he refers to the bus as "Mommas car". But that's fine, he referred to the lady bus driver as Dada cuz she wears a hat.
He is still over the moon in love with his cars cars. He can say mater, Ramone, and doc and refers to lightning as the "car". But he does know who is who by their name. His favorite thing is to have Mater tow other cars around, stack. Cars on top of one another, or cram re cars inside of the fire truck or garbage truck. We have been trying to wean him from the Cars movie -- but really we're just trying to wean all of ourselves away from the TV/movies. This winter turned us into pretty lazy people and parents.
The boy is obsessed with the moon and searches for it all the time. He often spots it in the morning sky! He also loves to see airplanes and helicopters in the sky and watch/listen to rescue vehicles go by.
He has many many words and phrases. I particularly love his little signs (learned Thank You this month) and the way he says please, yes, all gone, all done, I want down, and oh no! I can't explain it but the way this kid says his vowels is the darndest thing!
We have been getting outside more, playing in the sun and hikingn when it's warm. It's been a wonderful change!
